Thai Ladyboys – Katoeys

This book is called, “Quest for Katoeys” and was written by someone named “Lung David”. Is that a strange name, or what? Katoeys is a synonym for “ladyboys” which is a synonym for “shemales” which is a synonym for transvestites, transsexuals, cross dressers, whatever.

A ladyboy is male originally. The ladyboy could have an operation to remove the male anatomy and form a female anatomy at a cost on average of 100,000 Thai baht. That is about $3000 US dollars in today’s economy. That is not an expensive operation and probably won’t be done all that well. GOOD operations cost in excess of 150,000 Thai baht from what I hear.

The book gives MANY great interviews that let you peek inside the world of Thai ladyboys and their curious lives. The book is well written and fairly expensive at over 400 baht in the bookstore I was in. I’ll try to find it on Amazon and give you a link here… Not sure it’s available anywhere except Thailand though.

Here’s another book that I’ve read about as having good information and heard from one friend that has a very strong interest in the subject… The Third Sex. Kathoey: Thailand’s Ladyboys .

If you are in the bookstore it is a small book and is located in the section where the books are about farangs spending time in Thai jails, the bargirl books and the rest of it. There was only this one ladyboy book and makes me think that there must be a market for more out there if you think you’re qualified to write a book about them. I know someone that can supply you with many ladyboys photos in case you need it. Let me know!

Sorry – about photo of book – not sure why it’s not showing up. Google must have a policy in place where they give a quick check to photos published on blogger that have “sex” in the title of the photo. Maybe will be online soon? Vern

I`ve read both of the books. Quest for Katoeys is just a novel about someone doing research on Ladyboys. In the end too many questions remain unanswered. What happens to he older Katoeys? “In Lung Davids book you can read: “They sleep.” This is certainly not true as I know a lot of really really old Ladyboys and they take part in everydays life as well. But may be not in places where Lung David goes to. Lung David in my opinion just means uncle david as “lung” means “uncle” in thai.
The book by Richard totham is a lot better as he tried to look at the scientific side of the katoey phenomenon. I stayed some time at the house of a quite famous ladyboy and has good statements. After reading this book you may know a lot more about what it is like being a ladyboy. But you will never understand 100 percent as long as you aren’t katoey yourself.

Excellent comment, thanks for taking the time to write it up about these katoey books – My mind wasn’t thinking in “Thai” when I read “Lung”… I know that loong means uncle but I’d have spelled it loong others use the lung as a long u sound which isn’t quite right for the pronunciation.I think we can only guess what it’s like to be a ladyboy in the flesh. Can you imagine what it’d be like to be a “cut” ladyboy? I can’t. Thanks again.
