I’ve written about this topic before, but I just saw a post at another blog about, “Why Does Thailand have so many Ladyboys?” and decided to write my ideas again in a more easily understood post. Hopefully.
Why Does Thailand have so many Ladyboys?
Gender role differentiation is not really all that different here. Kids growing up are left to do as they will. Some Thai boys play with dolls and play girls’ games. Some play with trucks. Some girls play with trucks. Usually the big difference is that the boys are left to do WHATEVER the hell they want. Thai boys do anything they wish. Rarely, so rarely have I ever heard the command – don’t, here in Thailand. Only when the kids might be in danger. Sometimes a Chinese Thai will be big on discipline, but it’s not the norm here. Boys are left to develop as they will then. There’s not this machismo that is so strong in American, Latin, and other cultures. In fact maybe I’ve NEVER seen a Thai guy act in a way I would consider macho or especially manly. You know?
Ladyboys make bank. They can make decent cash, more so than they would fixing motorbikes or living off their girlfriend. It’s a safe alternative to selling drugs and an easier alternative than going to the university and becoming a politician. Those guys make the most money. You know what I just realized? Are there NO women politicians in this country? I don’t think I’ve seen any.
To me – these are the two overriding reasons there are more ladyboys here in Thailand than other nations.
